Trends in Color Choices: Gray – Yay or Nay?
May 1, 2019
Clients ask us all the time: “What are today’s ‘hot’ colors?”
Or “I’d really like to use [black/white/gray/blue/hot pink], but is it ‘in’ or popular?”
And we need to answer those questions with a question:
“Is this your ‘forever home’ — or is there a chance you’ll sell the house at some point in the future?”
The client’s answer to this question will tell us what kind of recommendations to make:
Choosing Colors for your “Forever Home”
If you’re planning to retire in your home and live in it for the rest of your life, our advice is simple: Go for it and make it your own!
Paint those cabinets and walls your favorite colors. Choose tile that fits your style. Make it yours!
In a client’s home recently, we were quickly greeted by an interior that was a surprising lime green.
The homeowner’s first words to us were “Yeah, I know, lime green — but it’s her favorite color, and she loves it. We’re going to retire here, so why not?”
(Note: His wife was not at home at the time of our visit.)
But What if it’s Not Your Forever Home?
If you’re reselling in the the next year or two, or even the next decade, conventional wisdom tells us that the usual earth tones and off-whites are always a smart choice.
But Elegant Kitchen & Baths co-owner Dusty D’Agostino would add gray to the list.
”We’ve been hearing for at least three years now that gray is on its way out,” says Dusty. “But to paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of gray’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. About 80% of the work we’re doing today has elements of gray and off-white.”
So if you think you might sell (at all) in the next few years, here are some thoughts on going gray in your kitchen or bathroom:
—Gray lower kitchen cabinets with white upper cabinets
—All white cabinets with a grey kitchen island
—White- or light-colored quartz countertops with grey veining
Another Popular Option
Also trending right now is the color that most people claim is their favorite of them all — blue!
Yes, cobalt and blue-gray are very hot right now. (One of our favorites is Sherwin-Williams Passive.)
